My 90 Day Fitness Journey

IMG_2984My 3 Month Fitness Journey:  I learned that I love bulking and suck at leaning out! Also that Fitness competitions are not my thing and would rather nail every obstacle at a Spartan Race or apply for American Ninja Warrior. I was secretly deciding to enter the Beachbody Classic at Vegas this month, but nope maybe in the future, future.  I also learned I appreciate and love counting my macros instead. #IIFYM

To Start off these are my measurements. I started on March 10, 2014 and ended on June 7th.

10169234_10204070734718293_6557737053166784279_n (1)I love the Body Beast program! It’s great to do at home or the gym. Especially if you don’t know what to do once you get to the gym or at home. When I worked out at home I used the Bowflex Adjustable weights and a stability ball. That’s the only equipment. Lifting was between 8-30 pound dumbells. It depended on what the exercise was and type of set.  I dropped my cardio to 1-2 times a week during the first 9 weeks. After that I added more to it.

Ok so the HARD part: EATING!!! Ok I should of done a better lean bulk. I had to eat 2400 calories a day! I started the first few weeks really good, but it was so hard to eat clean. I was eating nonstop and felt full where I couldn’t eat enough, so I went the easy way and ate more junk then I was use to. Here are my progress pics from the beginning.10173226_10203610927943411_648610433_n10154873_10203610927903410_551023053_n

Day 1-Day 27

Day 1-Day 27

In 27 days, I didn’t put too much weight on. But by week 9 I had gained 11 pounds.  It was time to shred this crap off! I mean crap- literally! I was suppose to go down to 1200 calories a day….now remember I was at 2400 and had to immediately drop down to 1200! Who does that???? Well not me! I tried and was starving! I don’t know how these competitors do it! I am not disciplined enough to do it! So I had to go back to 1500 calories and kept my macros at 40p/30c/20f. After my 3 weeks of modified leaning out, I dropped 5 pounds and 8 inches. I’m not mad at that. I figured it took me 9 weeks to gain so I don’t plan on losing in 3. Here are the rest of my pics.

IMG_3083IMG_3067IMG_3062So…. I may not look as fit as I started, but guess what- hard work and dedication will get me back there! I am so much happier not having to starve cause that was just plain miserable! Thanks for stopping by and reading my blogg! Check back and I’ll have more updated pics and posts!

Day 64 of Body Beast/Bulking

photo.phpDay 64 of body Beast! I finally start the Beast phase or in other words cutting stage. It went by really fast! Thank goodness the bulking part is done! I didn’t follow a strict diet, but just did the calories. It was super hard at the beginning when I was going for the lean bulk. I’m excited to start doing more cardio again. I limited it to about 2 times a week which included teaching Insanity class and going to the Combative’s gym and doing some circuit training 1 time week. I also do a fit club, but I usually don’t push my self there. I’m suppose to limit cardio to one time a week….1502507_10203879218650511_6451551172737440266_n

These are my measurements from today and when I started. I’m ok with some of the measurements. I’m not liking the waist numbers. I can feel I gained weight and it makes me feel a bit miserable. I don’t know how people can bulk for longer then 2 months!  I feel blah and tired all the time. Even in my Insanity class, I do more modifications then usual. I think what keep me going is the motivation from my fitness groups and my hubby getting up in the morning.

Day 42 Body Beast

This is the program I'm currently doing.

This is the program I’m currently doing.

Happy Easter! I decided to update today instead of tomorrow since I’ll probably be pigging out all day and my measurements and weight will be off for tomorrow.

These are my stats from Day 1 to now. I’m excited that my chest and hip/butt went up! I’m a little confused on my waist. It looks and feels super big, but the measurements are consistent. 10250771_10203705306102806_598499034_nIMG_2012Yikes, as you can see, I did gain some weight in the midsection. I told myself that I will start cleaning up my eating. It’s been really hard to eat 2400 healthy calories! I was eating all day and full, making it up to only about 1900 calories. I still do my fit clubs for cardio on Tuesdays and Thursdays for cardio. I also gave a live Insanity class to about 150 soldiers since my last blog.10178174_10203705306142807_1010893492_nLast weekend I ran a half marathon, which totally sucked! I think it was the extra weight I put on;) Well maybe because I have not ran since February. I did manage to complete it at a decent time.10256045_10203705291662445_203498667_n10248800_10203705291822449_1805267286_nSo far I must say that I am ok with my results so far! Can’t wait for the Beast/shredding stage!

Hapalua Half Marathon

IMG_1861I ran my third half marathon yesterday! It was the Hapalua, Hawaii’s half. Talk about not being prepared! The last run I did was the Great Aloha Run which was in February and was 8 miles. In between that and now I maybe ran a total of 10 miles….if that!  I was excited to pick up my number and shirt.  I loved this years colors! Check it out!IMG_1830At packet pick up of course I had to take a pic! IMG_1827IMG_1845The route started in Waikiki and downtown. I was only at mile 2 and was thinking….why did I do this? I’m tired already! I’m not going to make it. Every negative thought went through my head. I tried listening to music, but it really didn’t help. I was not about mile 4 and then I had to use the bathroom! I kept thinking this is going to mess up my time! I’m not going to stop. I’m going to keep going. Then my side and stomach was hurting. I finally made it to about mile 6 and decided I have to stop and pee. I was frustrated a bit. So I stopped to take a selfie…I mean I was not feeling it!

Then the Diamond Head hill was a killer like always! I walked a lot of it, but tried to keep jogging. It’s a mind thing! I kept thinking negative so of course it was going to be a lot worse then it was. I was able to speed up coming down the hill and then there was a rainbow so of course I had to stop and take a pic! IMG_1852It was much better in person! After that was only 2 miles left. I kept thinking, it’s only 2 miles. It was the longest 2 miles ever! But I saw all these people running. Old, young, fit, not so fit and I would find someone to catch up to and keep their pace. I saw the finish line and was like: “I’m almost there.” I finally made it and was able to speed up and run to the finish! It’s a great feeling of accomplishment even though I didn’t beat my PR and had stopped a few times. I got my medal and malasada with a smile. Official time was 2:21:55. IMG_1853

Day 27 Body Beast

This is the program I'm currently doing.

This is the program I’m currently doing.

I’m already on day 27! time is going fast. So fast that I started with the Lean workout schedule and decided to switch to the Huge Beast schedule. If I would of stuck with the lean beast, I would be in the Beast/shredding stage. I’m not ready. I want more muscle mass and not to mentionI like eating 2400 calories a day!

I did gain 6 pounds since I’ve started. It mostly went to my waist which I’m ok with for now. It should go away next month in the leaning out phase….It better! #TrustTheProcess….. My biceps and calves increased which is good. And at least my chest stayed the same….I don’t need them shrinking anymore! My diet isn’t so great, but it could be worse. It’s very hard for me to eat 2400 clean calories a day! I eat all day so I’ve been splurging here and there. Eating crap!! Today I start my 7 Day Shakeology challenge so hopefully it gets me back on track!

For those unfamiliar with the Body Beast program. It starts off by a Build and Bulk phase. During this phase, you are lifting heavy weights and eating more then normal. It is ok to gain weight! Then in the third phase, you will drop the calories/macros and lean out, leaving you with lean muscle!

Everyone Says: “Lift Heavy.” What is heavy?

1533913_568742563215982_1224913788_n

How many times have you heard people tell you to lift heavy? Have you ever asked what that meant? First time I heard that, it was quite intimidating! I’m picturing the people in the gym with veins sticking out and tons of weights on the bars. Even curling 3o pound dumbbells.

This is what I pictured weights will do:women-bodybuilder-01So I always lifted super light weights about 10-12 reps. Would I break a sweat? Not really. Did I get results? Not really. Then I started to go heavier. I wanted the ‘toned’ look. Guess what- lifting heavy will give the lean, toned look.2014-03-03-whatwomenthinkwillhappenliftheavye1360469567159Now we go into the ‘lifting heavy’ part. Heavy to me is lifting enough so you are struggling in the 2nd and 3rd set! Depending on your body, it might be 5 pound weights, 10, 20 or whatever it is. Not everyone’s heavy is the same! For example, if I bench press 65lbs for 15 reps and I’m not tired, my next set of 12 will be 95pounds. And then my last set of 8 will be 95 or even 115. There’s is no point of lifting if you are not tired or feeling it! Don’t be scared to pick up those weights! Even if you start out at 5lb kickbacks and you feel the burn…..that might be your heavy.

74668_477663272323912_677215339_n

There are so many different versions of lifting heavy. That is mine. I go off of what I experienced. So if you have a different version, please share. I’m always open for new ideas or different thoughts! I just do what works for me and like to share that with others.

Weeks 1 and 2 of Body Beast: Build Phase….aka Bulking

This is the program I'm currently doing.

This is the program I’m currently doing.

I’m currently doing Round 2 of Body Beast! It looks a bit intimidating, but it’s not! Don’t be afraid to lift weights! Weights=results!

My first round, I was scared of getting big or bulky. So I lifted heavy, but didn’t do the meal plan requirements. I actually lost weight and it broke my plateau! Here are my results from my first round.

Round 1 Body Beast Results

Round 1 Body Beast Results

Now that I am learning more about fitness, I am trying the recommended calories. This means I am eating 2400 calories a day! I just finished week 2 and I put on a couple pounds. Eating this much is hard! I tried doing a lean bulk at first, but I was too full and couldn’t get my calories up! Now I’m eating a little more junk here and there without feeling guilty. I do try to stay within the recommended macros for the program.

For supplements, I use Beachbody’s Hardcore protein shake since there’s no flavor, it goes great with my Shakeology. So yes, I also use Shakeology and sometimes Fuel Shot. Pre- workout, I rotate between E&E and C4.

photo (2)

Why am I doing this? 1. I want to lean out and get more muscle definition. 2.ABS 3. Booty 4. I want to see if bulking and leaning really work for me!  No, I’m not competing or doing any type of competition. I just like to try different things so when people ask, I can say yes it worked for me or no it didn’t. I can speak from my experience, but of course, everyone’s different.

Ok, here’s the pics…Ignore my iPhone camera quality! I need to find a different place to take them. But here are my pics from when I started and now today- beginning of week 2. (Week 1 on left and week 2 on right). Oh and ignore my HaPpY facial expressions;)

This was fun. We had a great time! You don’t need mud in an obstacle course!

Run While You Can!

549109_10200981050678123_815807958_n

I’ve never really been a runner! I always told myself, “I hate running or running sucks!” I was never fond of it. Even in the military, we had to run three times a week. I wouldn’t never make it. I would fall out of the run and try to sneak off if it was possible. I would even walk and they would have to wait for me. I was not good at it! So I never really tried too hard….

While living in Germany, my friend, Hayat, wanted me to train with her for the Amsterdam marathon. I agreed to it. It was cold in Germany. We ran in the morning and it was slow….I mean it took like an hour to do 3-4 miles. It was to the point where I wasn’t really helping Hayat at all, but slowing her down….and she’s an awesome runner by the way! I had quit training with her. I couldn’t hang.

10149394_4025400651591_60795605_n

That’s Hayat in the blue.

Well, I didn’t run so much after that until coming to Hawaii. My husband, Darrell and I ran 2-3 miles every once in awhile, but I was dreading it and kept complaining. I could barley make it! Then my friend, Nathacha, asked me to do the Great Aloha Run in 2012. I still remember her saying….”it’s only 8 miles.” I agreed to it and survived! We did a steady pace.

Image

My friend Nathacha- she’s not even tired….waving and I’m about to die!

After this, I went back to running about 10 miles a month-i f that. Did the Color Run and Torch Run, which were 5K’s. Then in August of 2012, I got this crazy idea to run the marathon: 26.2 miles! I said….I have plenty of time to train….nope didn’t train, well not with running. I did Insanity and some weight training most of the time instead. I did make it in 5:30 which isn’t too bad.

Image

Even after that, I still would say how much I hated running! It was brutal! At mile 20, my legs felt like they were going to fall off! I wanted to quit, but I made it that far so I might as finish. I posted on my Facebook Fan page how it sucked, how I hated it, and how bad it was for me. Someone commented on my post. They said, ” I should be glad that I can run.” The person wrote how they were in an accident and wished they could run. They will never be able to run again! It made me think. Ya they were right! I should be glad I’m still able to do it. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you go….YOU’RE still a runner!

Since then I have done 2 marathons, 2 half and a few 5 and 10K’s. I also share to others that say how they hate running that they should be glad they can. There’s a lot of people that want to, but can’t.

Remember 1 mile is 1 mile!
